How the days are counted
The big number is the count of calendar days from today to your date, the same as counting the midnights (or "sleeps") in between. A date is treated as a day on the calendar, not a moment in time, so a daylight-saving change can never turn 41 days into 40, and leap days are counted. Today is taken from your device's clock in the event's time zone: leave it on My time zone, or pick the zone where the event happens if that is somewhere else.
Add a start time and tick Show hours for the exact time left instead, such as "12 days and 5 hours". That uses your browser's time-zone rules to work out the real moment the event starts, so it stays right across clock changes.
Keeping the poster current
Paper cannot tick down, so the poster is right for the day you print it, and the small "As of" line says which day that was. To reuse one poster, tick Leave the number blank and write each day's count in by hand, or in dry-wipe marker on a sheet slipped into a frame.
Questions
Why does the count drop at midnight rather than at my event's time?
Because it counts calendar days. If you want the exact time left, add a start time and switch on Show hours.
What happens on the day itself?
The poster says Today! instead of a number. If the date has passed, the form tells you so and asks for a future date.
Does it work for a date years away?
Yes. Any date your browser's date picker accepts works, and the number simply gets bigger; four-figure counts are set smaller so they still fit the design.
